Understanding Lip Anatomy & Injection Techniques

No two lips are alike. That’s why your treatment plan should be just as unique as you are. A foundational understanding of lip anatomy allows our expert injectors to create balanced, natural-looking results.
Key Lip Anatomy Terms:
  • Vermilion Border: The outer edge of the lips that defines shape
  • Cupid’s Bow: The two peaks at the center of the upper lip
  • Philtrum Columns: The ridges that extend from the nose to the upper lip
  • Body of the Lip: The full area of the upper and lower lips that adds volume
Common Injection Approaches Based on Lip Shape:
  • Enhancing the vermilion border to create definition
  • Adding volume to the body of the lip for fullness Accentuating the Cupid’s bow for a classic contour
  • Subtly lifting the philtrum columns to improve proportions

The approach is tailored based on your natural structure, desired outcome, and balance with surrounding facial features.

Common Myths About Lip Filler

Myth 1: Lip filler always looks fake.
Fact: When done correctly, lip filler enhances your natural shape with subtle volume. Overfilled lips are avoidable with proper technique and product selection.
Myth 2: Lip filler is permanent.
Fact: Most fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which the body naturally absorbs over 6–12 months.
Myth 3: You’ll need filler every month.
Fact: Most clients return every 6–12 months for maintenance. You do not need constant retreatment.
Myth 4: Lip filler migrates or causes “pillow face.”
Fact: Migration is rare and often the result of poor technique or overfilling. A skilled injector minimizes this risk and can reverse results if necessary.
Myth 5: The procedure is very painful.
Fact: Most lip fillers contain lidocaine, and topical numbing is used beforehand. Most clients experience mild pressure, not pain.
Myth 6: Any provider can perform lip injections.
Fact: Lip filler is a medical procedure. Choosing a trained medical professional with advanced knowledge of facial anatomy is critical for safety and beautiful results.
Myth 7: Lip filler causes cold sores or infections.
Fact: Standard sterilization prevents infection, and those with a history of cold sores can be pretreated with antiviral medication.
